GENERAL INFORMATION
Teachers:
The teachers' names, office numbers, and office phone numbers will be given out the first day of class and posted on the web STAFF. Teachers’ office hours will be posted outside their doors on the bulletin board.
Pre-requisites
You will already have received some general information about Dawson College as well as specific information from the Nursing Department concerning immunizations, uniforms, textbooks, etc. If you did not receive this information during the summer or at registration, you should speak to the Chairperson of the Nursing Faculty.
Government regulations require certain screening tests and immunizations for all students in health-related programs. This is done to protect you and the clients for whom you will be caring. This testing/immunization is to be completed prior to the hospital experience. (Proof of Immunization and a Medical Certificate must be submitted to Health Service).
Nursing 110 is offered in the Autumn Semester only, and is a pre-requisite for entry into Nursing 210 in the Winter Semester. Nursing 110 consists of 4 hours of classroom theory, plus one 8-hour block of clinical/laboratory experience per week.
Theory: 60 hours
Classes are given in two-hour blocks. Each student has classes scheduled on Monday and Thursday. The timetable in this workbook lists the topics of each class. The workbook includes readings and preparation required for each class. Additional preparation may be given out in classes. If you have questions, see the teacher concerned with the topic. Do the required readings and preparation outlined in the 110 Workbook prior to coming to class. This allows you to participate fully in the learning activities in the classroom.
Laboratory: 56 hours
Labs are run in eight-hour blocks. Six are scheduled for the semester on either Tuesdays or Wednesdays. They are held in Rm. 6B.3 and begin at 08:30h unless otherwise indicated. The timetable lists the weeks and topics of each lab. The Lab Manual will provide readings, preparation activities, and other pertinent information for each lab. Do your readings and preparation prior to each lab. Students arriving unprepared for clinical/lab may be dismissed and counted absent for the day.
* BRING ANY MATERIALS REQUESTED IN THE LAB MANUAL TO EACH LAB., e.g. STETHOSCOPES.
* ALWAYS BRING THE LAB MANUAL TO EACH LAB.
Clinical: 64 hours
Required preparation for clinical will be given to you before each clinical experience.
Note: Please read the Dawson Nursing Department Policy on Absenteeism in the Nursing Department Policy Handbook, as this will affect you throughout the three years in the program.
Clinical experience is done in eight-hour blocks. Clinical days are scheduled for the semester on either Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Clinical experience begins at 07:30h. There is a possibility that some evenings will be required. Clinical facilities may be at the Jewish General Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital, and the Neurological Institute. Please refer to the dress regulation policy of the department in the policy handbook.

Student responsibilities re laboratory and clinical experience:
Students are expected to:
1. Participate and attend all classroom, lab and clinical days. Classroom theory and lab experiences are a necessary part of the learning that is needed in order to practice in the clinical area safely and professionally. Students unable to attend a given lab should call 931-8731, local 1689 and leave their name and course number with the Secretary. Students must arrange with the clinical teachers to make up content of missed lab experiences. See lab manual for detailed policy. A student who is unable to attend clinical experience on a hospital day must notify the institution before the shift begins. Clinical and lab experiences are compulsory.
2. Complete the required preparation. You must take your clinical manual to each clinical experience.
3. Be on time. Late arrival is considered unprofessional. Students who are late may be dismissed and counted absent for the day.
4. Presentations (lectures, videos etc.) in class and lab will not be interrupted. Latecomers will need to wait outside until a suitable moment for entry.
Teaching Methods
Teaching in the classroom and lab is shared by members of the 110 team. In the hospital setting the student is placed in a small group with one clinical instructor for the entire semester. Teaching methods include lectures, small group work, simulations, audio visual aids and hands-on practice in the lab. The student is expected to come prepared and actively participate in both class and lab.
Policies
1. College Policies
Students are reminded to acquaint themselves with the Academic Regulations and College Policies listed in the Dawson College Calendar, and the Institutional Student Evaluation Policy.
2. Departmental Policies
Students are responsible to read the nursing department policies included in the nursing department policy handbook and to address any questions relating to them to the department chairperson. These policies include information on evaluation, academic standing and advancement, absenteeism, cheating, exams, immunization, dress regulations, charting, grade review.
3. Religious Holidays
Absence for religious holidays is accepted, however it does not excuse the student from the obligation to remain informed about what takes place in the regularly scheduled classes.
4. Class cancellation
Students will be notified as soon as possible of any cancellation in class, or clinical. The notice will be posted on the bulletin board.
